Indian Premier League 2025 Retention Rules: Before the mega auction of IPL 2025, the Governing Council of IPL has issued the retention rules. Under this retention rule, the franchise can retain a maximum of six players in any combination of Retention + Right to Match (RTM).

retention slabs

Franchises can retain a maximum of five capped players (Indian/foreign) and a maximum of two uncapped players. Each uncapped player retained will be worth Rs 4 crore and this amount will be deducted from the total purse of each team (Rs 120 crore for IPL 2025). The cost of retaining five capped players would be as follows.

The first player retained will get Rs 18 crore. Whereas the second and third retained players will be given Rs 14 and Rs 11 crore respectively. There itself,

The fourth retained player will get Rs 18 crore and the fifth player will get Rs 14 crore.

New change in the use of Right to Match (RTM)

Another way to reacquire your existing players is through the RTM option during the auction. That is, if a franchise retains only three players, it will have three RTMs. However, BCCI has made a lot of changes in the way the RTM option is used during the auction. Where previously, teams could agree to match the amount of the highest bidder in the auction to acquire the player, this time, the highest bidder must match their bid before the team holding the RTM acquires the player. One last chance to increase will be given.

Limit on fees of foreign players in mini-auction

Meanwhile, the IPL Governing Council has also dealt a blow to foreign players who earn big salaries in the mini-auction. According to the new rules, a foreign player must compulsorily register for the Mega Auction (2025). Failure to do so would mean that he would miss the subsequent smaller auctions as well. Exceptions to this may be made in the event of injury/medical condition, which must be confirmed by the Home Board.

Foreign players will also have salary cap space from the next mini-auction (2026). The maximum fee that a foreign player can receive from the mini-auction will be determined by the highest retention price of Rs 18 crore or the highest auction price in the mega auction, whichever is lower.
