The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday (September 28) announced the India squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against India which starts from October 6.
The Test members of the team were excluded from the 15-member team which will be led by India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav. While Varun Chakravarthy received a call back, all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and pacer Mayank Yadav were also included. Abhishek Sharma and wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, who were not part of the T20I series against Sri Lanka, have also bbeen called back. Sanju Samson, who has registered two ducks in his last two T20I outings, also managed to retain his place. However, talented opener Ruturaj Gaikwad and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan once again did not place in the India T20I squad. The decision surprised many, and it became a talking point after the squad announcement. Why Ruturaj Gaikwad was not picked for T20I series vs Bangladesh? Ruturaj last played for India in July against Zimbabwe. The 27-year-old led India to a gold medal win in the Asian Games, but hasn't still become a regular member of the Men in Blue. Many including Ricky Ponting rate him as the most technically sound batter among the current crop, but has been devoid of opportunities. The Maharashtra batter was captain of India C in the Duleep Trophy, and will be leading Rest of India in Irani Cup against Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai Indians from October 5, a day ahead of the start of the T20I series in Gwalior. However, there wasn't a parallel series or a match going on when India toured Sri Lanka in July-August. The right-hander wasn't even included for the ODI leg of the tour which India lost 0-2. Gaikwad has time and again lost his place to Shubman Gill - the crowned prince of Indian cricket. Gill was picked ahead of him in the list of T20 World Cup travelling reserves as well. The Punjab batter was recently promoted and named India's vice-captain in Sri Lanka. Ruturaj Gaikwad is the ninth ranked T20I batter in the world. Only Suryakumar Yadav and Yashasvi Jaiswal are ahead of him among Indians. The CSK captain has been groomed by none other than MS Dhoni, and possesses rich leadership qualities as well. Then why has he not been picked for the Bangladesh T20Is despite the absence of regular top-order batters Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. For now the only possible reason could be that the selectors and management are keen to see him play more red ball matches. India are gearing up for a crucial Test tour of Australia, and Gaikwad might be in the scheme of things. Having a batter of his quality as a backup will be a massive boost for India. Ready to lead Rest of India in Irani Cup, Gaikwad would have anyway been unavailable to play in the first T20I. The Ranji Trophy season starts from October 11, a day before the third T20I in Hyderabad. Also, the India A team would be travelling to Australia for two unofficial Test matches - 1st in Mackay from October 31, and second at MCG from November 7. Maybe, Gaikwad is gearing up to play for India A! Why Ishan Kishan was not picked for Bangladesh T20Is? Ishan Kishan is also part of the Rest of India squad in Irani Cup. He hit a hundred in the Buchi Babu Tournament, and then in the first innings of his Duleep Trophy 2024 outing. The hundred was followed by a string of low scores which could have gone against him. Sanju Samson showed better consistency, and capped off his campaign with a hundred as well. The other reason for his omission despite Pant's absence could be the same as Gaikwad's. Dhruv Jurel is currently India's second-choice wicketkeeper-batter, but Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir could still be tempted to have him as Pant's backup in Australia. The attacking southpaw would be a better like-for-like replacement for Pant in the long five-Test tour. India T20I squad vs Bangladesh: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, Riyan Parag, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Varun Chakaravarthy, JItesh Sharma (wk), Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Mayank Yadav
