New Delhi: Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg has dropped a bombshell that has stunned the cricket fraternity as he believes Virat Kohli, who was once considered the front-runner to break Sachin Tendulkar's iconic Test run record, is no longer in the race.
Virat Kohli is now facing a decline in the longest format of the game. After his Test average dropped below 50 since 2020, now Brad Hogg's statement has given rise to a new debate about whether the right-handed star Indian batsman has lost the chance to break Tendulkar's record for most Test runs.
Virat Kohli will not be able to break Sachin Tendulkar's record: In a video, Brad Hogg compared Tendulkar's Test runs with Kohli and England star batsman Joe Root, saying only Root is a legitimate contender to break Tendulkar's world record of 15,921 runs in his 200 Test career. He said Kohli has lost his rhythm. Brad Hogg said, 'I don't think Virat will be able to reach there. I think he has lost his momentum, and the momentum he has lost is from the last several years. He will have to come back in the next 10 Test matches, otherwise, he will fall behind.
Virat's form has dropped since 2020: Virat Kohli has not had a good start to the crucial 10-Test series for India in the next 4 months. He failed in two innings of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai. Kohli's decline in Test form has been evident since 2020. In 52 Test innings of 30 Tests between 2020 and 2024, Kohli has scored only 1669 runs at an average of 32.72, including 2 centuries and 8 half-centuries.
Joe Root can break Sachin Tendulkar's record: The 33-year-old Root has scored 12,402 runs in 146 Test matches so far and is 3519 runs behind Tendulkar. Kohli, who will turn 36 in November, has scored 8871 runs in 114 Test matches. Hogg said, 'Joe Root has played 146 Test matches and scored 12,000 (12402) runs. Sachin Tendulkar has scored almost 16,000 (15,921) runs in 200 Test matches. That is 4000 runs in 66 Tests. I think Joe Root can come close to surpassing this.'
