IND vs NZ: New Zealand has always been a strong force in international cricket. Over the decades, they have consistently punched above their weight and defeated some of the world's best teams.
Their most memorable victory came against India in the 2019 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final which cemented their position as one of the top teams worldwide. New Zealand's tour of India 2024 is less than three weeks away from going all guns blazing. The Kiwis are expected to play three Tests against India, with the first Test slated to be held on October 16, Bengaluru. There were three instances when the Kiwis got the better of Indians by 10 wickets and let's look back at New Zealand's three major Test wins over India by wickets. 1. New Zealand's utter dominance over India at Christchurch: In 1998, New Zealand hosted India at AMI Stadium in Christchurch and it turned out to be one of the Kiwis' most commanding performances. New Zealand posted a solid 459 runs on the board. Captain John Wright took full advantage of the conditions and top-scored with 185. On the contrary, Kapil Dev and Venkatapathy Raju took 3 wickets apiece for India. The visitors struggled to cope with the conditions as they posted a low first-innings total of 164 and were enforced a follow-on. In the second innings, the Indians accumulated 296 but it wasn't enough as they succumbed to an embarrassing defeat. Needing just 2 runs to win, New Zealand chased down the target without losing a wicket. 2. The Basin Reserve Masterclass: Four years later, the Kiwis replicated their sheer dominance at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. India's batting lineup collapsed like a pack of cards in both innings, managing only 161 in the first, even worse in the second as they were folded for 121. Shane Bond was the wrecker-in-chief as he took seven wickets (3/66, 4/33). The hosts capitalized on this poor performance by posting 247 runs in their first innings, courtesy of Mark Richardson's 89. Zaheer Khan was the pick of the bowlers for India as he took a fifer in the first innings. On the other hand, the Kiwis required just 36 runs to win in the second innings. The hosts achieved the target without breaking a sweat, in what yet another commanding 10-wicket victory for them against India. 3. Wellington Triumph: Fast forward to 2020, when India toured New Zealand once again, they succumbed to yet another shocking defeat as New Zealand beat India by 10 wickets at Basin Reserve in Wellington. India's first innings total of 165 didn't stand a chance against the hosts' 348. Kane Williamson top-scored with 89 in the first innings. Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson rattled India's batting line-up by taking four wickets apiece in the first innings. The Indian batsmen couldn't recover in the second innings as they managed only 191. Tim Southee upped his ante in the second innings by taking a five-wicket haul whereas Trent Boult took four wickets. With just 9 runs needed to seal the match, the hosts comfortably secured the win without losing a wicket.
