Just a day before the India-Bangladesh Test match, structural concerns have surfaced at Green Park Stadium, leading officials to restrict ticket sales for one of the stands.
The Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department (PWD) has flagged the Balcony C stand as "unsafe for a full-capacity crowd," casting a shadow over the match preparations. Safety Measures and Reduced Capacity Following a detailed inspection on Thursday, government engineers concluded that the Balcony C stand may not be able to support its maximum capacity of 4,800 people. After a six-hour review, the PWD advised the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) to reduce the number of tickets sold for the stand. As a result, only 1,700 tickets will be available for that section. The UPCA and PWD are collaborating closely to ensure the safety of spectators. A joint meeting confirmed that the stand could not withstand the full weight of a large crowd, necessitating the reduction in ticket sales. Venue Director Sanjay Kapoor commented, "After discussions, we have decided to reduce the seating capacity. About 2,000 seats will be sold." This leaves the stadium's total capacity at 26,007, with parts of Balcony C left vacant. Declining Prominence of Green Park Green Park Stadium, owned by the Uttar Pradesh government's sports department, has seen a decline in international matches in recent years. With the newly-built Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow emerging as the state's premier venue due to its superior facilities, Green Park has hosted fewer high-profile games. Additionally, the floodlights at Green Park have raised concerns. During India's last Test match at the venue against New Zealand, poor lighting conditions in the final session on Day 5 allowed New Zealand's last-wicket pair to secure a dramatic draw. As repairs continue and the crowd size is limited, all eyes are on Green Park Stadium to deliver a safe and seamless experience for fans during the India-Bangladesh Test, starting Friday.
