India has a long history of talented cricketers who didn't receive the recognition they deserved, and Abhimanyu Easwaran seems to be facing a similar fate.
Eleven years in first-class cricket, coupled with a strong batting record, Abhimanyu's performances have been nothing short of remarkable. The 29-year-old who plays for Bengal operates as a right-handed opening batter. He has been a vital part of Bengal's success in the domestic circuit. However, despite over a decade of consistent performances in first-class cricket, Easwaran still hasn't earned his India cap. Talking about his journey, he made his Twenty20 debut for Bengal in the 2016-17 Inter State Twenty-20 Tournament on January 31, 2017. Notably, he was a standout performer in the domestic circuit and thus, he earned his place in the India A squad for the 2018-19 Deodhar Trophy. He brought the best out of himself when he became the leading run-scorer for Bengal in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy, accumulating 861 runs in just 6 games. In August 2019, he was selected for the India Red team for the 2019-20 Duleep Trophy, where he played a match-winning knock of 153 runs in the final against India Green. In 2021, he was named as one of five standby players in India's Test squad for their home series against England. Statistically, he has been nothing short of impressive, and across 11 years of first-class cricket, he mustered 7,316 runs at an average of 48.5, laced with 25 centuries and 29 fifties. These are the kind of numbers that would normally make an opening batter a potential candidate for the Indian Test team. But despite these figures, he still waits for his India cap. Very recently, the 29-year-old continued his dominance in the domestic circuit with a century off 154 balls in the Duleep Trophy 2024 during India B's contest against India D. He constructed his innings with the help of eleven fours and a six. Earlier, he chipped in with an unbeaten 157 in a previous round against India C. While the competition for a spot in the national set-up is tough, it's hard to ignore the Dehradun-born's decade-long journey and the crucial contributions he has made to Indian domestic cricket. The rise of young talents like Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal has made it tough for Easwaran to sneak into the national team. Both Gill and Jaiswal have already established themselves as key figures at the top of the order in Tests. Thus, it has limited opportunities for other contenders.
