Women's T20 World Cup 2024: As the Women in Blue gear to give another shot at lifting their maiden world cup trophy, Anjum Chopra has heaped rich praises on Harmanpreet Kaur, saying that India are lucky to have her as captain.
Harmanpreet Kaur, who took over the captaincy from Mithali Raj, has led India in the last five world cups. The 35-year-old was India's captain at the 2017 and 2022 ODI World Cup, and then the T20 World Cups in 2018, 2020, and 2023. India were runners-up in 2017 and 2020. India Women might still be waiting for their first triumph in an ICC tournament, but Harmanpreet Kaur has transformed the team into a unit which is feared in world cricket now. The superstar batter has backed her players, and developed a handful of match-winners in the team. Former India captain Anjum Chopra also showed a lot of respect for Harmanpreet Kaur and her contribution to women's cricket which has seen a lot of transition - on and off the field - with her at the helm. Anjum backed the credentials of Harmanpreet as a leader as gears up for another ICC showpiece event with her team. "See with Harmanpreet at the helm, I feel India have a really good leader. And experienced. When I say leader because she is experienced. She has seen the time when there was nothing, and she has also seen the time when things have changed and there is professionalism. India is fortunate that she is at the helm," Anjum Chopra told MyKhel in an exclusive interview. "And also she has people behind her like Smriti, Deepti, who are experienced. Rajeshwari can be in the mix, or somebody like Shreyanka. What I see is that there are a lot of goods in this Indian team, and the supply which is coming back from behind is also good," she added. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led India Women contingent left for the UAE to participate in the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 on Tuesday, September 24. The skipper, who has played in all the editions of the Women's T20 World Cup till date, said she was aware of the experience she has, and was ready to handle the pressure and burden of expectation. India Women will kick off their campaign against New Zealand in Dubai on Friday, October 4. India are placed alongside Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in Group A.
