New Delhi: Top West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell plans to play on till the 2026 T20 World Cup after failing to win its last edition that was held on his home soil in the Caribbean in June.
The 2026 edition of the tournament will be held in India and Sri Lanka and Russell backed himself to carry on representing his country to have another shot at the title. Russell is part of the West Indian side that will play in three T20Is in Sri Lanka from October 13. One of the team’s mainstays, the burly all-rounder said he is fit to bowl and has no intention of stopping anytime soon. Russell said he has had positive conversations with head coach Darren Sammy over his future and is ready to commit playing T20Is. "I've talked with Sammy and he said he wants me to keep playing some international cricket. And I think by looking around and seeing the talent that's in the Caribbean, I think I'm going to push my body and push myself to play international cricket for another two years,” he said, as quoted by indiatoday.in. Though he made his intentions clear, Russell acknowledged that West Indies have many talented youngsters who are all eligible to represent the West Indies. "I definitely want to play the World Cup of 2026 because there is a lot of talent that you know could have. I could have walked away from the game international-wise, but I just want to see the youngsters do well in terms of all-rounders,” the fast bowling all-rounder, who helped Kolkata Knight Riders win the 2024 Indian Premier League, said. “I still can hit the ball anywhere I want to hit the ball, still bowling at a good pace, still fit, can move around. I don't see why I should stop."
