The 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is underway and the fans have already been treated to some thrilling contests at the end of the first week of the tournament.
However, the season has also seen some controversies sparking a debate on social media. The latest one is Bhojpuri commentators in IPL 2024 facing a backlash on social media over a piece of commentary that has been termed 'vulgar and offensive' by the fans. A clip of Bhojpuri commentary from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)'s recently concluded clash against Sunrusers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Eden Gardens is going viral on social media where the commentators can be seen using 'obscene' language. The incident happened during the penultimate over of SRH's run-chase against KKR when Heinrich Klaasen faced Mitchell Starc. Ahead of the third ball of the over, a commentator in the Bhojpuri panel urged Starc to bowl a wide yorker considering an in-form Klaasen was on strike. However, Satrc ended up bowling one into Klaasen's zone from around the wicket and the SRH batter dispatched him for a huge six over the mid-wicket boundary. The Bhojpuri commentator praised Klaasen for the brilliant shot while criticising Starc for the poor delivery. However, the words that he used to describe the situation didn't go down well with fans on social media. The clip of the comments soon went viral on social media with people calling out the commentator over his language. 'This commentator must be sacked!! IPL is something mostly all family members watch on their dinner table! Such cheap commentary with double meaning lines will take the whole purpose of publicising Bhojpuri down,' wrote a person, reacting to the video.
