On this day back some 17 years back, Team India managed to end a 24-year jinx by becoming world champions in the inaugural T20 World Cup 2007 held in South Africa.
T20 cricket was still trying to find it's feet in international cricket and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni managed to script history with a young side which had plenty of unknown faces at that time. One of the little-known World Cup heroes for India was Haryana all-rounder Joginder Sharma picked out of nowhere for the T20 World Cup and became part of cricketing folklore with his display in the final. Dhoni famously gave the last over of the T20 World Cup 2007 final to Joginder Sharma against arch-rivals Pakistan with Misbah-ul-haq going strong.Former Pakistan captain Misbah had the match won with a six and four in the final over but Joginder managed to fool the Pakistan batter into an ill-advised scoop shot which was pouched by S. Sreesanth at short fine-leg to seal the win for India and Dhoni.
The 2007 T20 World Cup was the last of the T20I international matches for Joginder, who also turned out in 4 ODIs for India without doing much. He was selected by MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for four season from 2008 to 2011 in which he picked up 12 wickets in 16 matches for the former champions. Joginder Sharma approached Haryana HC after being ignored for promotion Aside from his cricketing career, post his return from the T20 World Cup, Joginder Sharma joined the Haryana Police in 2007 at the post of DSP. Earlier this year, Joginder approached the Haryana High Court since he was not considered for promotion to an IPS officer. Joginder's plea had argued that his name had not been included in the list of those considered for elevation to the IPS. The state government was considering 12 state police service officers for elevation to IPS for the select list of 2021. Most of the DSPs in the list had joined state police in 2009. But the World Cup hero's name, who had been recruited under the sports quota, had not been included even though he had joined in 2007. Joginder Sharma's radical action against farmer protestors Joginder, who was posted in Ambala district in March this year, came up with the proposal to cancel the visa and passport of those found guilty of vandalism during farmer's agitation. "The protesters approaching Haryana during the farmers' stir and indulging in acts of vandalism like breaking barricades have been identified through CCTV footage and drone cameras and through the videos which we have shot. Against such people, we will be seeking through the Ministry of External Affairs and through the embassies that their passports and visas be cancelled," Ambala's DSP Joginder Sharma, had told reporters. "We have taken many photographs in which some protesters are seen indulging in acts of vandalism. We are verifying their names and addresses," he said. Joginder Sharma reunited with MS Dhoni after 12 years Joginder also met his T20 World Cup 2007 skipper MS Dhoni last month and posted the photo on his social media account. The former Haryana cricket team captain had used an old hindi song - 'Ae Yaar Sunn Yaari Teri' and captioned the post, "It was nice to meet Dhoni after a very long time. The fun of meeting you after almost 12 years was different today."
