New Delhi: Veteran better Ajinkya Rahane will be the captain of heavyweights Mumbai in their upcoming Irani Cup match against Rest of India where all-rounder Shardul Thakur is expected to return to action after surgery.
Ranji Trophy winners Mumbai will have the services of first-choice players Shreyas Iyer, Musheer Khan, Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian in the match in Lucknow. But the availability of India Test batter Sarfaraz Khan remains unclear as he is currently on national duty in the Bangladesh series where the home team won the first Test by 280 runs in Chennai on Sunday. Khan wasn’t part of the Indian playing team in Chennai but is in the squad for the second Test that begins in Kanpur from September 27 for which the BCCI has named an unchanged side. If Khan isn’t picked to play the Kanpur game for which the team would be announced on Tuesday, Mumbai Cricket Association might request the BCCI to let their prolific middle-order batter to turn out in the Irani Cup. “Look, Sarfaraz is the only specialist middle-order batter in the squad. Dhruv Jurel is a keeper-batsman and Axar Patel is an all-rounder. What if there is a need for a concussion substitute? But yes, the Irani Cup starts on October 1 and travelling from Kanpur to Lucknow even on September 30 won’t be a big deal if the Test match ends early,” PTI quoted a BCCI source as saying. India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav and all-rounder Shivam Dube won’t feature for Mumbai in the Irani Cup as they would be in Gwalior on October 3 for the first 20-over game against Bangladesh that will he held on October 6.
