Shubman Gill surpasses Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant in WTC with 5th Test hundred

Shubman Gill scored his fifth Test hundred on Day 3 of the first Test between India Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday, September 21. The 25-year-old surpassed Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Mayank Agarwal on the list of Indian batters with most centuries in the prestigious World Test Championship (WTC).

Gill has amassed five tons in 26 matches of WTC. On the other hand, Virat, Rishabh and Mayank have smashed four hundreds each in 37, 25, 19 matches respectively.

Gill is also in the second position among the Indian batters with most hundreds in the World Test Championship. Rohit Sharma with nine centuries in 33 contests is leading the table.

Gill and Pant struck tons on Day 3 in the second innings against Bangladesh. Rohit Sharma declared on 287-4, having taken a lead of 514 runs. Bangladesh were 158-4 when play was called off due to bad light, needing a further 357 runs to upset India.

Gill remained unbeaten on 119 runs off 176 balls. On the other hand, Pant managed 109 runs off 128 balls. They added 167 runs for the fourth wicket. While Gill hit 10 fours and four sixes, Pant hammered 13 boundaries and four sixes.

In 26 WTC matches, Gill has scored 1,611 runs at an average of 37.46, with five hundreds and six half-centuries.
