Gujarat Greats have a strong squad at their disposal for the upcoming edition of the Legends League Cricket. The franchise has been rechristened for the new season and will be led by former India star Shikhar Dhawan.
Dhawan - who recently retired from international cricket - is going to be one of the marquee players of the third edition of the competition, starting September 20. Before the auction, the Gujarat franchise retained Chris Gayle, who still holds the record for the leading run-scorer in T20 cricket. The former West Indies batter also holds the record for scoring most centuries in T20 cricket. They spent the most on Liam Plunkett, who was a part of the England squad in the ODI World Cup 2019. Apart from being an effective bowler, Plunkett can also chip in with useful runs lower down the order. Gujarat went big to buy veteran fast bowler Jerome Taylor, who was a useful bowler for the West Indies in his heydays. Lendl Simmons was one of the most consistent top-order batters for the West Indies and played match-winning knocks for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Simmons is also amongst the leading run-scorers in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Former Afghanistan skipper Asghar Afghan, who last played in the 2021 T20 World Cup, was bought by Gujarat for Rs 33 lakhs. Morne van Wyk from South Africa is an explosive prospect at the top of the order. Sybrand Engelbrecht from the Netherlands is a brilliant fielder and is also a consistent batter. Paras Khadka, who laid the platform of cricket for Nepal, brings in experience. Sekkuge Prasanna, Shannon Gabriel and Kamau Leverock are some of the other players in the Gujarat team.
