New Delhi: Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja proved to be the torchbearers for the Indian team on the first day of the first Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai.
The duo, with their miraculous individual knocks, scripted a massive partnership record in the Test format against Bangladesh. The pair of Ashwin and Jadeja registered the highest partnership for 7th wicket or below for India against Bangladesh in Test cricket, surpassing 133-run stand between legendary Sachin Tendulkar and left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan for the 10th wicket in Dhaka in 2004. They also registered a record for the highest seventh-wicket partnership at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai after crossing 153-run stand. Ashwin-Jadeja joined Kapil Dev and Syed Kirmani in elite list With their rescue effort for the Indian team after they lost the top order quickly, Ashwin and Jadeja joined legendary Kapil Dev and Syed Kirmani in an elite list of Indian batting pairs. Only these two Indian batting pairs have more than 500 partnership runs for 7th wicket or below in Test cricket in home conditions. Ashwin also became the second cricketer in the world to complete 1000 runs in the history of WTC and also take 100 wickets. He joined Jadeja in the elite list, who became the first player to achieve the rare feat earlier this year during the England tour of India. The spin legend now has 1000 runs to his name and 174 wickets while Jadeja has scored 1600 runs and taken 102 wickets. Ashwin and Jadeja helped India reach 339 for 6 in 80 overs when stumps were called at the Chennai stadium. Local boy Ashwin, who smashed his 6th century in Tests, was unbeaten on 102 while Jadeja was unbeaten on 86 at the end of day’s play.
