Ravichandran Ashwin was back at his happy hunting ground in his hometown Chennai after he scored his latest fifty in the opening Test match against Bangladesh on Thursday (Sep 19).
Batting on Day 1, India were in a precarious position when the all-rounder reached the landmark. His exploits coupled with Ravindra Jadeja saw India mount a comprehensive comeback having been 96/4 and 144/6 at one stage in the first innings.
Ashwin scores 50 Coming to bat in the second session of Day 1 after a poor start, Ashwin and Jadeja came good for India. Both batters came to bat at the same stage after the quick-fire dismissals of Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul. Ashwin has a good track record while playing in Chennai having also scored 106 against England in 2021. He would sweep the ball for a single on the first ball of the 60th over and needed 58 balls to record the feat. It is Ashwin's 14th fifty in the red-ball format having also scored five hundreds during his illustrious career. Playing in his 101st Test match, he has more than 3300 runs in the format while also scalping 516 wickets.  India recover from poor start While Ashwin-Jadeja came in handy for Team India, it was a poor start for Rohit Sharma's men having lost the toss. Interestingly, Bangladesh became the first team since 1982 to win the toss and choose to bowl in Chennai. Skipper Rohit (6) was dismissed after a poor start while Shubman Gill followed him as he went without troubling the scorers. Former skipper Virat Kohli was also out of ideas when he was dismissed for 6. Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul would then contribute with 39 and 16 respectively before Bangladesh struck again. Hasan Mahmud was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets while Nahid Rana and Mehidy Hasan Miraz also bagged a wicket each. At the time of writing India were 268/6 with Jadeja and Ashwin putting a stand of 125 runs unbeaten for the seventh wicket. Ashwin was batting on 71 while Jadeja was batting on 48 runs.
