Piyush Chawla is one of the best spinners in India, and the veteran feels Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad can replace Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma once they retire from all formats of international cricket. He hailed the two young batters for their performances.
Rohit and Kohli announced their retirement from T20Is after India’s win in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and the West Indies. The duo will continue to play Test cricket and one-day internationals. Rohit is 37, while Virat will turn 36 in November. The batting legends are nearing the end of their careers.
Speaking on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, Chawla picked Gaikwad and Gill as the two players who have the talent and skills to take Indian cricket forward.
“Shubman Gill because of his technique. He can easily come out of his poor form as he is technically strong. Another one is Ruturaj Gaikwad,” he said.
“Getting dropped or injured is part of the sport. It will happen but whenever Ruturaj Gaikwad has been given a chance, he has looked a different batter. For me, these two (Gaikwad and Gill) are special players.”
Gill will play for India in the Test series against Bangladesh from September 19. Gaikwad was not considered for the home Test series, and he will continue leading India C in the Duleep Trophy 2024.
Gill has played 25 Tests, 47 ODIs, and 21 T20Is, scoring 1492, 2328, and 578 runs. He has hit four hundreds in Test, six in fifty-over format (including a double hundred), and one in the shortest format.
Gaikwad has represented the country in six ODIs and 23 T20Is, amassing 115 and 633 runs.
