Riyan Parag's six off India D pacer Vidhwath Kaverappa on the opening day of the Duleep Trophy 2024 second round matches left all those who watched it astonished.
The 22-year-old India A batter just brought his front foot forward and lifted the delivery straight over long-off for a massive six. The picturesque shot got a special acknowledgement from everyone at the ground, and the clip went viral on social media. However, the youngster, who walked out to bat at four, failed to capitalise on his good start and departed after scoring 37 off 29. His innings consisted of five fours and a six. Parag had come to bat when India A were 21/2, and his counter-attacking innings pushed India D on the back foot momentarily. Riyan Parag batted at three in the Duleep Trophy 2024 first round matches. He scored 30 in the first innings, and 31 off 18 in the second. Despite getting consistent starts, the Assam batter is yet to score big in the tournament. An impressive knock in Duleep Trophy can help his chances of making a Test debut for India. He has already made his debut in the other two formats earlier this year. Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has also suggested Shreyas Iyer to not take the aggressive route like India D captain Shreyas Iyer. Basit advised that Parag should use the opportunity to attract the attention of the selectors, and put himself as a contender for upcoming Test series against New Zealand and Australia. "He has a lot of talent, and he's such an effortless player. He hit that straight six today over mid-off, it was top-class. But he isn't justifying that talent. He has to play session by session. Just like (Shreyas) Iyer, he is also getting aggressive. I admit, you have to counter-attack, but once you succeed in that, you should focus on prolonging your innings," Basit, who played 19 Test matches for Pakistan, said. "These are the days where Riyan Parag needs to capitalise and score big. There's New Zealand series, then Australia series. Don't focus on white-ball matches. You've got the no.4. In the previous match, he played aggressive, too. Here, you had already scored 30-35 runs, you can't give your wicket like that. He has to take care of that. And the coaches need to talk to him, tell him this isn't the way," "His competition is against some very big players. We all know who are they; they're going to retire in 2-3 years. He has to perform as much as he can," the 53-year-old added. Notably, the likes of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan and Rishabh Pant are currently occupying the middle-order spots in the Indian Test team. Riyan Parag, who has close to 2000 runs in 31 first-class matches, would have to score big consistently to break open the door for a Test cap.
