The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee didn’t name any vice-captain for the first Test against Bangladesh. It seems Jasprit Bumrah has been removed as Rohit Sharma’s deputy. Shubman Gill, who is the vice-captain in white-ball cricket, was also not considered for the role in the five-day format.

The right-arm pacer led India in a Test match against England in 2022 and was the team’s vice-captain during the five-match Test series against England at home.

He was expected to retain his position, but the BCCI has decided against naming a deputy for the opening contest. No reason was given to the apex body of international cricket.

With India to play five red-ball games in Australia later this year, the selectors will have to appoint a vice-captain soon.

KL Rahul has also worked as vice-captain and led the Test team. His below-par performance in the longest format led to his removal from the role.

Ajinkya Rahane was Virat Kohli’s deputy, but the former has fallen out of favor and doesn’t play for India.

Meanwhile, Bumrah may get rested for the second Test against Bangladesh to manage his workload. The speedster will compete in all three Tests against New Zealand.
