New Delhi: Afghanistan cricket team will bank on their previous experience of playing in India to get the better of New Zealand ahead of the one-off Test, believes team’s senior batter Rahmat Shah.
As Afghanistan national team host the Black Caps at the Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground in Greater Noida from September 9 to 12, an eye will be kept on a big upset for the Asian side to elevate its status in the red-ball format. Aghanistan has played their home matches in India between 2018 and 2019. Rahmat Shah was a part of the Afghanistan sides that played Tests in Bengaluru (2018 vs India), in Dehradun (2019 vs Ireland) and in Lucknow (2019 vs West Indies). "Our past experience in India will help us. We had our home ground in Noida and in Lucknow, and we have played a lot of matches here and done a lot of camps here. We are also accustomed with the weather and pitch conditions of India, so we certainly have an edge," Shah told Cricbuzz. Shah is the leading run-scorer for Afghanistan in Tests (578 runs) and ODIs (3730).The 31-year-old top order batter wanted to give New Zealand some tough time on the Indian soil. "We will try to give them a tough time. They have won the ICC Test Championship and we tried to have the best of preparations and we are looking forward to the challenge that is lying ahead," he said. Has Afghanistan won a Test match before? Afghanistan has played nine Test matches since they first faced India in 2018 in Bengaluru. However, the team has managed to win only on three instances. Afghanistan defeated Ireland by seven wickets during their one-off Test in Dehradun in 2018. The emerging nation from Asia then trounced Bangladesh by 224 runs in Chattogram to register their first away Test match victory. Since then the team played five Tests but hasn’t won in any of them. The last Test played by Afghanistan was against Ireland between February and March this year in Abu Dhabi, wherein Ireland won by six wickets.
