Delhi: England's limited overs captain Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the T20 International series against Australia starting on September 11. Butler, who was injured during The Hundred tournament, will not be able to participate in this three-match series. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) gave this information while announcing the team on Thursday.
In Butler's absence, Phil Salt has been made the captain. Although the wicketkeeper batsman has been selected in the team for the 5-match ODI series, his chances of playing in it are also low.
Butler suffered a calf muscle injury during The Hundred tournament. It was expected that he would be fit before this home series against Australia, but now it has been confirmed that he will not be a part of the T20 series. Butler has been away from cricket since the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup.
The explosive right-handed player captained England during the T20 World Cup played in the West Indies and the USA this year. Butler has been out of cricket action since England's defeat in the semi-finals and now there is a possibility that he may be out of the entire cricket season of England's summer.
In place of Butler, the selectors have included Jamie Overton in the team, who will play as a batsman in the series as he has not fully recovered from the stress injury. Apart from this, Jordan Cox, who is part of England's Test team, has also been included in the ODI team against Australia.
Australia is currently playing a 3-match T20I series against Scotland and will then play a T20I series against England from September 11. After this, both teams will play a 5-match ODI series from September 19.
For your information, let us tell you that Phil Salt currently plays for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
