24 players went to eight teams in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 drafts that took place on Sunday, September 1. More than 70 Pakistani cricketers had registered for the drafts, including Haris Rauf, Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan and Shan Masood, but only Usama Mir was picked.
The 28-year-old Mir will turn up for the Melbourne Stars. Haris Rauf, who played for the Stars, was not picked. Rishad Hossain became only the second Bangladeshi cricketer to play in the BBL after veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. The 22-year-old Rishad stole the limelight in the T20 World Cup, although the Tigers failed to qualify for the semis. In seven games, the leg-spinner picked up 14 wickets with a couple of three-wicket hauls to his name. He will play for the Hobart Hurricanes. The BBL Draft saw batters take the spotlight early on. The Stars picked Ben Duckett, while the Sydney Sixers brought James Vince back through a Retention Pick. Laurie Evans moved to the Melbourne Renegades, Shai Hope joined the Hurricanes, and pre-signed players Colin Munro (Brisbane Heat) and Finn Allen (Perth Scorchers) were assigned to Round 1 Picks. The Sydney Thunder and Adelaide Strikers made fast bowler Lockie Ferguson and all-rounder Jamie Overton their first picks, respectively.
"The Big Bash remains a destination of choice for the world's best players, as reflected by the calibre of nominations received and the players recruited today. We thank all players and their agents who put themselves forward for this year's Drafts. "We also congratulate and thank our clubs on the preparation for the event and the quality of lists they have compiled, and to Seven and Foxtel for their hard work in bringing the Drafts to life," Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia's Executive General Manager, Big Bash Leagues, said. The BBL is scheduled to start on December 15 with the opening match between Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Stars at the Perth Stadium.
