Joe Root continued his brilliant Test form by scoring a century against Sri Lanka on Thursday at Lord's. With the ton, he became the England batter with the joint-most Test tons alongside Alastair Cook with 33 each.
On Thursday, the opening day of the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka, Root's century massively helped in lifting England from 130/4 to 358/7 by stumps. Root now also has scored the most tons among the finest batters of his generation in the longest format of the game. Kane Williamson (32), Steve Smith (32) and Virat Kohli (29) have all been overtaken by the Englishman. Root has also scored more runs than any other batter of his generation in the format and is currently in the running to break legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most runs scored in Tests. He is currently in the 7th position for most runs scored in the format with 12,274 runs and needs a little over 3,500 runs to overtake Tendulkar. The Fab Four (Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Kane Williamson and Joe Root) are still going quite strong, however Kohli has fallen behind in terms of Test hundreds. He may be the leading century-maker in ODIs, but Kohli has some catching up to do in Tests as he takes the bottom-most place among all 4 former captains. Recently, former England captain Michael Vaughan did some number crunching of his own and took a dig at the Indian fans with a 'good morning' message on X. Vaughan personally noted down some striking stats of Kohli and Root, comparing how the 2 stack up today.
It looks as if Vaughan indeed succeeded in his attempt to tease Kohli's fanbase as Root does have superior numbers to the star Indian batter despite debuting more than a year after him. Root beats Kohli in almost every Test record as not only does he have over 3,000 runs than Kohli in the format, he also averages higher (50.33) than Kohli (49.15) and has 64 half-centuries in comparison to Kohli's 30. However, Root has played 31 more Tests and batted in 72 more innings than Kohli, so the gap is understandable.
