South Africa spinner Tabraiz Shamsi made a controversial remark on Suryakumar Yadav’s sensational catch of David Miller in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final. He grabbed a ball near the boundary rope in the final over of the tournament to change the game in India’s favor.

However, a section of the critics questioned the legitimacy of the catch. Two months after the final in Barbados, South Africa spinner Shamsi, who was a part of the team, shared a video from a cricket match where a fielder takes a catch on the boundary.

The batter then runs towards the fielder to check the legitimacy of the catch.

After a long inspection, it was agreed that there was no clear evidence of the catch being a fair one, and the batter survived. Giving his take on the video, Tabraiz said that the method should have been used to check  Suryakumar Yadav’s catch, which would have resulted in South Africa’s favour.

“If they used this method to check the catch in the World Cup final, maybe it would have been given, not out,” wrote Shamsi on his X account.

However, the comment didn’t go down well with fans, who hit at the Proteas spinner.

The wrist-spinner had to clarify that he was joking.

“In case some people do not understand that it’s meant to be a joke and no one is crying… let me explain it to you like a 4-year-old child ðŸä— It’s A Joke,” he added.

South Africa needed 16 runs off 6 balls with David Miller at the crease. The left-handed batter hit a full toss from Hardik Pandya towards the long-off, where SKY caught the ball but got rid of it quickly before crossing the boundary role.

He came back inside to complete the catch once again. Courtesy of his presence of mind, India won the game by 7 runs to end their 11-year wait for an ICC title.
