LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka has opened up about KL Rahul's future with the franchise and claimed that decisions about retentions will only be made after the rules are out.
Rahul's has been with LSG since the franchise's inception in 2022 and been their captain. The Indian star led them to back-to-back playoff appearances in 2022 and 2023 before a lacklustre 2024 season saw them miss out on the spot. During this year's IPL, Goenka was seen in an animated chat with Rahul, which had gone viral. This started speculations that Rahul could be allowed to leave the franchise. However, the LSG owner would meet up with the Indian batter recently, which sort of dampened the rumours of his exit. Speaking to PTI, Goenka said he was a little surprised that the meeting got a lot of attention as he had always had such interactions with Rahul over the past few years. The LSG owner said that Rahul is an integral part of the team and he's like family and would remain the same. "Look, I've been meeting KL regularly over last three years. I'm a little surprised this meeting got so much attention. As I've said we have not taken any call till the retention rules are out," Goenka told reporters while unveiling Zaheer Khan as their team mentor. "But KL has been an integral and important part of the LSG family since inception. He's played a very important role. He's like family and will be family." There is enough time Speaking about the retention plans of the team, Goenka said that they have enough time and will take a call once the rules are rolled out by the BCCI. "We have all of September, October and November to decide that. Let the policies be out. We have not even thought about the team going forward, whether retention will be three-four-five or six, we have no clue," Goenka said. "Let us see, there is enough time, so bit by bit. Whatever decisions we take today will impact us for the medium term future, so it has to be very well thought out and considered." "There is enough time for it so it's too early. Let the BCCI announce the policy first, then there will be discussions."
