West Indies beat South Africa by eight wickets in the rain-affected third T20I on Tuesday (Aug 27) to complete a 3-0 sweep. Batting first, South Africa put up 108/4 in 13 overs but the mighty West Indies chased it down in 9.2 overs.
This is West Indies' eighth T20I win against South Africa in 10 matches since March 2023 including two back-to-back series clean sweeps before and after the T20 World Cup 2024. It is to be noted that West Indies failed to advance to the T20 WC semi-final while Proteas were the runners-up. West Indies had won the first two T20Is by seven wickets and 30 runs, respectively. Shai Hope was named Player of the Series for 134 runs in three matches. "Just trusting my game. Prepare and plan well. Got a great support staff. Just hope we can continue... We're playing good cricket. We understand that tournament cricket is so different to series cricket," Hope said at the post-match presentation. Apart from Hope, it was Nicholas Pooran who was specifically influential for West Indies, scoring 119 runs at an average of 59.5 and strike rate of 205. South Africa captain Aiden Markram, meanwhile, agreed that they can improve as a team and said, "Tough one today. Probably got the tougher of the conditions. That being said, we can improve as a team. It's going to take a little bit of time. It's quite a bit we can take from it. It's never great to lose." West Indies skipper Roston Chase, on the other hand, was happy with the win and said, "It was a good one [leading this time]. We wanted to win the series 3-0. I just asked the boys to give me victory because you want to start well. The powerplay, we were doing well. I just thought that today the guys came out and applied pressure early. In a shortened game, we want guys to go and play their natural game. Guys came out and played brilliantly."
