Delhi: England's star fast bowler Mark Wood has been ruled out of the Test series against Sri Lanka due to a muscle strain. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed this on Sunday, 25 August. Wood, who walked off the field in the second innings of the first Test match, will not play the last two matches of the series. The ECB announced the inclusion of 20-year-old Josh Hull in the team in place of the fast bowler.
Hull, who plays for Leicestershire in county cricket, is 20 years old. The left-arm fast bowler is 6 feet 7 inches tall and played a key role in the club's 2023 ODI Cup win. Earlier this month, he made his debut for England Lions against Sri Lanka, taking five wickets for 74 runs.
Hull has experience of 9 first-class matches, in which he has taken 15 wickets at an average of 58.06. In List A, the fast bowler has taken 17 wickets in 9 matches at an average of 24.23.
It is worth noting that England has taken a 1-0 lead in the ongoing 3-match Test series against Sri Lanka. In the first Test, Sri Lanka scored 236 runs thanks to half-century innings of captain Dhananjay de Silva (74 runs) and Milan Ratnayake (72 runs). In response, England scored 358 runs with the help of a century by Jamie Smith (111 runs) and gained a crucial lead of 122 runs.
In the second innings, Sri Lanka scored 326 runs on the back of a brilliant century by Kamindu Mendis (113 runs) and set a target of 205 runs for England. However, England achieved the target by losing 5 wickets due to the excellent batting of Joe Root (62* runs not out).
England's Test squad against Sri Lanka is as follows –
Ollie Pope (captain), Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Harry Brook, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Josh Hull, Dan Lawrence, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Ollie Stone, Chris Woakes.
Mark Wood made his Test debut against New Zealand at Lord's in 2015.
