Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam was dismissed for a two-ball duck on Day 1 of the 1st Test against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on Wednesday (August 21).
Babar was strangled down the leg-side by Bangladesh left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam with wicketkeeper Litton Das taking a brilliant diving catch. With Babar's early dismissal, Pakistan slipped to 16 for 3 in the 9th over of the innings after Bangladesh won the toss elected to bowl first. The start of the match was delayed by more than 4 hours due to wet outfield at Rawalpindi. Babar's early dismissal triggered a spate of memes with one fan commenting, 'No Nepal, No Party for Babar Azam', while another said 'Babar Azam scores 0 against mighty Bangladesh'.     Before Babar, Pakistan skipper Shan Masood was also dismissed by Shoriful Islam for a 6 while Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud provided the first breakthrough by sending back opener Abdullah Shafique for just 2. It was Babar Azam's 8th duck in Test cricket but it was his first-ever duck in home Tests and first in 37 innings in Test cricket. The low score continued Babar's poor run in Test cricket. In his last 13 innings, Babar has just scored 267 runs at an average of 20.53 with a best of 39. Meanwhile, Pakistan Shan Masood also said that he would have liked to bowl first if he won the toss. "We were going to bowl first as well, we have never played in Pindi in August before. The pitch has a lot of grass so yeah it will be quite challenging. It has rained as well, but if we bat well, towards the end of the game with the cracks, it will be tough to bat," Masood said at the toss on Wednesday. "Test cricket is about picking 20 wickets and when we went to Australia that was one of our targets, our bowlers did well there and it's about continuing that momentum with 7 of 9 Tests at home and we would like to do that. We have been very clear, we have communicated with players, it removes the uncertainty a bit. It's a proud moment, privilege and nothing is guaranteed in sport and it's an exciting opportunity to push for a place in the WTC final," he added.
