Pakistan's Test captain, Shan Masood, has provided insights into the team's strategic decision to opt for an all-pace attack in the first Test against Bangladesh, set to take place in Rawalpindi starting on August 21. Pakistan have chosen an all-seam approach for the first time since their 2019 home series against Sri Lanka.
All-rounder Salman Ali Agha stands as the sole spin-bowling option in the squad, a notable departure from the typical combination seen in Pakistan's Test lineups. Salman, an off-spinner, has consistently contributed in Test matches since 2023 but will not be a primary bowling option in this particular Test. In a pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Shan explained the rationale behind this decision, emphasizing Rawalpindi's unique conditions. "In Rawalpindi, whenever we have played domestic cricket, the conditions have favored the seamers and the batters. Spin-bowling hasn't been such a big threat. So we want to take what we do in domestic cricket forward rather than applying something new, which we don't normally get in Rawalpindi," Shan stated. The captain's comments highlight a calculated approach, focusing on exploiting the favorable conditions for fast bowlers at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The pitch in Rawalpindi is known for its assistance to seamers, with spin often playing a minimal role, making this strategic choice logical.
Shan also addressed the decision to include Mohammad Ali in the lineup over Mir Hamza, stressing the importance of each bowler's role within the team. "If you look in isolation, you can argue why this particular bowler was preferred over another," Shan noted. "We considered who could best support Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah, who will hopefully take the new ball tomorrow. We believe Mohammad Ali is well-suited for this role. He hits the deck hard, can move the ball in the air with the seam, and has that extra pace. It's not about one bowler being better than another, but rather about who fits the conditions best," he concluded. Pakistan playing XI: Shan Masood (captain), Saud Shakeel (vice-captain), Abdullah Shafique, Babar Azam, Khurram Shehzad, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Rizwan (wicketkeeper), Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, and Shaheen Shah Afridi
