South Africa ended Day 2 of the second Test against West Indies in a commanding position, on 223/5 leading by 239 runs on Friday, August 16 at Providence Stadium, Guyana.
Kyle Verreynne (50*) and Wiaan Mulder (34*) ended the day with an unbeaten 84-run stand which brought the Proteas into ascendancy. Earlier, Jason Holder (54*) and Shamar Joseph (25) added crucial runs for the hosts after they were left reeling at 97/7 at stumps on Day 1. Courtesy of their 40-run stand for the last wicket, West Indies managed to reach a total of 144 giving South Africa a slender lead of 16 runs in the second innings. Mulder (4/32) and Nandre Burger (3/49) were the pick of the bowlers for the Proteas who helped them made a comeback after they were bundled out for just 160 after opting to bat first on Day 1.  South Africa were determined to put up a good fight in the second one. Openers Aiden Markram and Tony de Zorzi were up to the task as they added 79 runs for the first wicket to get the lead past 90 without any loss. Seeing the game running away, Jayden Seales helped his team make a comeback as he managed to find the edge of De Zorzi's (39) bat which carried straight to Joshua Da Silva behind the stumps. Motie and Seales bring West Indies back After losing his partner, Markram continued to move the scoreboard ahead by bringing up his 11th half century in Tests. However, he failed to convert it into a big score getting dismissed for 51 after being trapped lbw by Gudakesh Motie. With the set batter back in the pavilion, West Indies got the opening they needed and Motie (2/61) inflicted a double whammy by dismissing captain Temba Bavuma (4) for another low score in the game. Tristan Stubbs (24) also gave away start falling prey to Seales (3/52), who managed to find his edge with his consistent line and length which went straight to Da Silva behind the stumps. The speedster, who had his tails up, further inflicted more damage on the Proteas by shattering the stumps of David Bedingham (0) in his very next over to leave them reeling at 139/5 leading by 155 runs. With South Africa in dire need of a partnership, Verreynne came to his team's rescue and was ably supported by Mulder who showed hunger with the bat as well. The duo made sure there were no more casualties in the day and took their team to the close of play with an unbeaten 84-run stand. Verreyne brought up his third half century in the format while Mulder played a gutsy innings of 34 (66). After a good fight back from South Africa, West Indies will be desperate to strike early on Day 3 and prevent the opposition from taking their lead past 300.
