Paris Olympics 2024 is already proving to be disappointing for India in terms of success. The country's hopes are being shattered in every sport one after the other and Indian players are missing out on winning medals. If this was not enough, now embarrassing news has also started coming in for the country. The first Olympics is continuously proving to be bad for India's young wrestler Antim Panghal. Antim Panghal, who was eliminated after losing in her very first bout, is now facing the threat of a ban. Panghal is accused of violating the rules and trying to send his sister to the Games Village using his accreditation card, after which there has been an uproar.
On Wednesday, 7 August, when the whole country was in uproar over Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the final, Antim Panghal came out for her match. She was contesting in the 53 kg category but she had to face defeat in the very first match and was out. After this, media reports from Paris late at night revealed that Antim's sister has been taken into custody by the Paris police, while his coach was accused of quarreling with a cab driver. There were even reports of Antim being summoned by the police.
There has been an uproar since this report came out and the Indian contingent has had to face embarrassment in Paris. It is believed that the Indian Olympic Association is not at all happy with this controversy. PTI has reported, quoting IOA sources, that preparations are being made to take action against Antim due to his act. It has been reported, quoting a member of the Indian contingent, that IOA officials discussed the matter and are considering imposing a 3-year ban on Antim Panghal. Preparations are on to ban not only Antim, but also his coach.
The report states that the IOA will wait for a decision for now and action will be taken only after Antim returns to the country. After this controversy surfaced, Antim's accreditation was cancelled and she was ordered to return to India the very next day i.e. on Thursday, August 8. However, before leaving Paris, Antim also presented her side and clarified that her health had deteriorated after the bout, after which she went out of the Games Village to stay in a hotel with her sister.
However, he had to face the Euro in the Games Village itself, for which his sister came with his card and during this time the police stopped him for verification and let him go after verification.
He also denied that his coach quarreled with the cab driver under the influence of alcohol. Antim said that his coach had also come to the hotel and during this time there was a misunderstanding due to the different languages of both. His coach had come to the hotel to collect Euro, in which there was a little argument between the driver and the other coach when there was a little delay, which was not a big issue.
