He will feature in the second match for Mumbai CA XI against Tamil Nadu Cricket Association XI at Coimbatore from August 27-30. Test specialist Sarfaraz Khan has been named the captain of the Mumbai side.
Suryakumar, who has previously led Mumbai, will participate as a player this time.
He aims to be involved in all formats of cricket. An official from the Mumbai Cricket Association confirmed his participation in the tournament.
"Suryakumar will play the second match for Mumbai," the official was quoted as saying by PTI.
The Buchi Babu Invitational tournament will take place at four venues in Tamil Nadu: Tirunelveli, Salem, Coimbatore, and Natham. Another MCA official mentioned anonymously that Suryakumar is always available for Mumbai whenever he is free.
"Surya wants to play in all three formats for India and as he has always been available for Mumbai whenever free, it won't be otherwise this year too," said the official.
The Buchi Babu Invitational used to be a season opener in Indian domestic cricket, attracting all Test stars at the start of the season.
However, it lost its appeal over recent years and failed to attract big names. The last notable players who participated while still being India captains were Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Mohammad Azharuddin.
Sourav Ganguly also played in the Buchi Babu during his comeback trail in the mid-2000s after being dropped by then-India head coach Greg Chappell. An MCA source added that Suryakumar's participation would motivate youngsters in the team.
The Indian players' next series is against Bangladesh - a two-match Test series starting on September 19 in Chennai.
This break allows them to participate in domestic tournaments like Buchi Babu and KSCA Gold Cup.
