Naseem Shah set for red ball return and Saud Shakeel named new deputy to skipper Shan Masood as Pakistan on Tuesday (August 7) announced a 17-member squad for the upcoming two-match home Test series against Bangladesh.
Shakeel takes over the crucial job of vice-captain from Shaheen Afridi, with selectors advising the star pacer to manage his workload over the coming months with the side scheduled to play nine Tests, 14 T20Is and at least 17 ODIs between now and the start of April next year. Shakeel's promotion as deputy to skipper Masood is among a few surprises from Pakistan's announcement as the Asian side named a new-look 17-player squad for their first Test series under head coach Jason Gillespie. Regular opener Imam-ul-Haq was dropped, while injured pace duo Hasan Ali and Mohammad Wasim Jnr were not considered for selection. However, all-rounder Aamir Jamal has been named in the squad and will only feature if fit. Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Nawaz, Noman Ali and Sajid Khan also were all notable absentees for the first Test squad selected by Gillespie, who begins his stint with the Bangladesh series. Apart from Naseem, Pakistan have recalled another pacer Mohammad Ali following a long absence from Test cricket. Batters Mohammad Huraira and Kamran Ghulam also have been handed their first call-ups at Test level after some impressive performances in domestic cricket. In total 13 of the 17 players selected were involved in Pakistan's most recent Test series in Australia over the new year, with Huraira, Ghulam, Ali and Naseem the fresh faces for the two matches against Bangladesh, scheduled to start on August 21.
