Paris 2024 Olympics Wrestling News: India's Vinesh Phogat caused a stunning upset by defeating reigning Olympic champion Yui Susaki of Japan 3-2 in a Round of 16 bout in the women's 50kg wrestling category at the Paris 2024 Games on Tuesday.

Phogat started the match in a calm manner against a high-profile opponent who was undefeated in the international circuit before the match began. In the follow-up, Vinesh lost a few passability points and was trailing 0-2 for most of the time. Time was passing fast and the Japanese opponent was leading the match 2-0. Just when defeat seemed inevitable, Vinesh scored a takedown with 20 seconds remaining in a thrilling encounter. Vinesh had a disappointing campaign in the last two Olympics in 2016 and 2020 as she finished 10th and ninth respectively.

Vinesh will now face Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarter-finals. Livach won the bronze medal in 50 kg at the 2018 World Championships. Apart from this, she has won a gold medal at the 2019 European Championships.

Susaki won gold at the Tokyo Olympics without losing a single point throughout the campaign. She has lost only five bouts since 2010 and has also won World Championship gold in 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2023.

The next match will be held in a short while in which Vinesh Phogat will show her strength. In which she performed well.

Vinesh Phogat once again performed brilliantly and defeated Oxana Livach in the quarter-finals of the women's freestyle 50 kg category.

Oxana put pressure on Vinesh in the last minute but Vinesh Phogat showed her class.

Phogat came out with an intention to take an early lead, keeping the Ukrainian Livach on her feet and scoring 2 early points.

Phogat adopted a defensive stance till the half-time as Livach continuously tried to penetrate Phogat but the Indian kept her composure and maintained her lead till the half-time.

The situation remained the same for the rest of the half, with the Indian player going on the offensive to maintain his lead and taking down the Ukrainian player once again to score two more points.

Understanding the need to take an aggressive stance and gain control, Phogat capitalised on Livach's desperation to turn her towards herself and pin her down for 2 points.

With 3.5 seconds left, Livach wrestled back to score another point but it would not be enough as Phogat won the match 7-5.
