India captain Rohit Sharma was on song during the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday, hitting a quickfire fifty (64 off 44 balls).
Chasing 241, Rohit began his onslaught from the word go, smashing five fours and four sixes during his knock, although he failed to guide his team home as India lost the match by 32 runs. in the course of his innings, Rohit surpassed the great Sachin Tendulkar on an elite list with his second fifty of the series. Rohit is still India's best bet at the top, and his inning while chasing in the second game is a proof of it. On a track where the Indian team lost all wickets to spinners, Rohit looked in his elements, and completely at ease. He took the attack to the opposition and completed his fifty off just 29 balls, with him and Shubman Gill adding 97 runs for the first wicket inside the 14th over.  Meanwhile, Rohit broke a few records on his way to completing another fifty in ODIs. With his 64, Rohit surpassed the great Sachin Tendulkar on the list of Indian openers with the most fifty-plus scores in international cricket. While Sachin held this record for the longest time, having scored 120 fifty-plus scores while batting at the top, Rohit went past him, with his tally reading 121, and counting. However, he is still not among the top three on the list, with former Australia opener David Warner leading with 146-fifty plus scores batting at the top, while Chris Gayle (144), Sanath Jayasuriya (136), Desmond Haynes (131) and Graeme Smith (131) follow him. Not only this, Rohit also became the first Indian opener to complete 300 ODI sixes. His four sixes during the second One-Dayer helped him reach the milestone. Rohit has hit 330 ODI sixes, one less than Gayle's 331 sixes overall. Former Pakistan captain and star all-rounder Shahid Afridi leads the chart with 351 sixes in the 50-over format. Another day, another record Rohit was on a record-breaking spree on Sunday. Besides surpassing Sachin, Rohit also eclipsed Rahul Dravid as the fourth-highest run-scorer in ODIs. While Dravid scored 10,768 runs in the ODIs, Rohit now has 10,831 runs and counting in 264 ODIs. India can restore pride in the final ODI scheduled on Wednesday (Aug 7).
