Team India's star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is currently on a break. At the same time, Mohammed Shami is recovering from injury these days and is busy getting fully fit. Now in the absence of the two most senior fast bowlers, the responsibility of handling Team India's bowling attack falls on Mohammed Siraj, who has been in excellent form for the last one year, especially in the ODI format. Siraj showed similar brilliance in the first ODI against Sri Lanka, where he took a wicket in the second over itself. In this way, his dominance in terms of taking the most wickets in the powerplay remains intact.

The first ODI match between India and Sri Lanka started on Friday, August 2 in Colombo. Team India came out to bowl first in this match. In the absence of veteran bowlers like Bumrah and Shami, Siraj was expected to create initial pressure. Given his recent record against Sri Lanka, this expectation was even higher and the star pacer did not disappoint.

Siraj shines in the powerplay

Siraj started bowling for Team India and took the wicket of Sri Lankan opener Avishka Fernando in the third over itself. Along with this, Siraj also maintained his dominance in the powerplay for the last one and a half years.

Statistics show that since January 2023, the Indian pacer has taken the highest number of 24 wickets in the powerplay in ODI cricket. Siraj has taken these 24 wickets in the powerplay in 25 innings. After him, Sri Lankan fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka is at second place, who has 22 wickets to his name. Unfortunately, Madushanka got injured and was ruled out even before the start of this series.

Indian bowlers dominate Sri Lanka

Not just the powerplay, Siraj has been consistently taking wickets in ODI cricket for the last one and a half years. In these 25 innings, Siraj has taken a total of 45 wickets.

If we talk about the first ODI match, Siraj did not get much success in it but he kept the pressure on the Sri Lankan batsmen. The spinners benefited from this, who destroyed the Sri Lankan batting. The Sri Lankan batsmen had no answer to the spin of Akshar Patel, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav.
