Aday after being ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) upcoming season, India pacer Mohammed Shami provided a post-surgery update on his right ankle injury.

Shami sustained a heel injury during the home ODI World Cup 2023 but he featured in all matches for India after coming in replacing Hardik Pandya in playing 11. He was stellar in the marquee competition and picked 24 wickets, the most by any bowler in the tournament, in seven matches. In the semi-final against New Zealand, Shami returned with the figures of 7/57, other than two fifers in the league stage of the quadrennial event. The 33-year-old last featured for India in the ODI World Cup final against Australia at Ahmedabad in November last year. Providing an update on his recovery, Shami took to X and wrote, "Hello everyone! I wanted to provide an update on my recovery progress. It has been 15 days since my surgery, and I recently had my stitches removed. I am thankful for the advancements I have achieved and looking forward to the next stage of my healing journey." The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah had said that the speedster will miss the T20 World Cup in June and can only be fit for the home series against Bangladesh in September. In the recent release, BCCI ruled Shami out of the IPL 2024 and stated that his progress is being monitored by the medical team. "The fast bowler successfully underwent surgery on February 26th, 2024, for his right heel problem. He is currently being monitored by the BCCI medical team and is ruled out of the upcoming IPL 2024," BCCI said on Tuesday. After the ODI World Cup, Shami has been absent from the Indian team and missed the South Africa tour and the recently-concluded home Test series against England among other bilateral series. In the absence of Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami will share the load of pace bowling for India in the T20 World Cup 2024.
