Glenn Maxwell, who will play for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, has unfollowed his franchise on Instagram. Glenn Maxwell took this step after winning the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024 with Washington Freedom on Monday, 29 July.

While it is not yet known if Maxwell was following the franchise earlier, many fans and RCB fan handle X are claiming the same. Maxwell's move comes at a time when the much-awaited meeting of IPL owners with BCCI is also scheduled to take place in Mumbai on Tuesday, July 30. The meeting is expected to provide clarity on the number of retentions by the teams.

Glenn Maxwell was bought by RCB for Rs 14.25 crore ahead of IPL 2021 and was retained for Rs 11 crore the following year. He received the same amount in 2023 and 2024 as well. However, his performance saw a massive drop in the last season in which he scored 52 runs in 10 matches at an average of 5.78 and a strike rate of 120.93. He took a voluntary break midway through the tournament to get into a better mental state but failed once again on his return ahead of the play-offs.

In the match played in the eliminator, he got out on zero on the first ball and RCB lost to Rajasthan Royals. Glenn Maxwell was dropped from the Punjab Kings team after a similar poor performance in IPL 2020. That season, he scored 108 runs in 13 matches at an average of 15.42 and a strike rate of 101.88.

Given the latest developments, it is very likely that Maxwell and Du Plessis will be released by the Bengaluru-based franchise. The IPL owners' meeting with the BCCI will also discuss reintroducing the Right-to-Match option (RTM). The owners are keen on having an option of five to six retentions. If the RTM option is brought back or a higher number of retentions is allowed, RCB might consider retaining Maxwell at a lower price.
