All-rounder Axar Patel praised Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, referring him a ‘bowler’s captain; after India‘s convincing 43-run win over Sri Lanka in the 1st T20I on July 28. In his debut as full-time T20I captain, Suryakumar led from the front with a match-winning 58 off 26 balls. The Suryakumar-Gambhir era got off to a winning start, and India will look to clinch the series in the 2nd T20I on July 29.

“During the last Australia series, I played under the captaincy of Surya bhai. He’s a bowler’s captain. He gives us a lot of freedom to make our own decisions on the field.

Even when we get hit, he encourages us, saying it was a good delivery. He’s always provides with valuable input and guidance. As a player, I’ve developed a strong rapport with him,” stated Axar to the press.

The all-rounder reflected on his time spent playing in the five-match T20I series that India won 4-1 last year, all under Suryakumar’s captaincy.

“In the five games against Australia, I have played with him. I didn’t see any noticeable changes in our dynamic during today’s game,” he added.

After conceding numerous runs in his opening three overs, Axar redeemed himself with an impressive final over.

As Sri Lanka comfortably pursued the 214-run target, Axar provided the crucial breakthrough by dismissing Nissanka. In the same over, he also sent Kusal Perera packing, sparking India’s comeback.

While the all-rounder struggled, Suryakumar frequently offered encouragement. The skipper’s confidence and support helped the all-rounder bounce back stronger.

“During the first three overs, when we were conceding runs, the captain encouraged me, suggesting strategies to take a wicket. He assured me that a few boundaries would not be an issue.

When the captain backed me and expressed belief in my abilities, it was boosting my confidence,” he revealed.
