WELLINGTON: Cricket can surprise you in more ways than one and the nail-biting, low-scoring thriller at the Hnry Stadium on Saturday was a classic example. A week or so ago, in the third T20I, Abhishek Sharma (113) scored more in a run-feast than the rest of the team combined. In the second ODI of the five-match series, India produced 113 runs in a rain-curtailed contest. The difference between the two 113s was that Abhishek fired his off just 38 balls while India struggled against some hostile bowling from Kyle Jamieson & Co.

The weather played its tricks and spiced the drop-in surface but the real difference was the intensity with which the hosts hit during the modest run-defence. At the half-way mark, it seemed like a comfortable 135-run chase but one bouncer at a time, the hosts turned it into a proper contest between bat and ball.

India played some loose shots, exposing many batters' techniques against sustained fire from both ends.
