Team India head into Wellington for the second ODI on Saturday with a 1-0 lead. The visitors won the opening game by five wickets on Wednesday in Auckland after bowling out the Kiwis for a mere 185. One of the most endearing aspects was the fielding, which has been a huge topic of conversation in the last few months.

Veteran star Rohit Sharma pulled off a terrific run-out to get rid of Daryl Mitchell for 28.

Virat Kohliwho turned 38 on Thursday, took a stunning catch in the slips to send back Nathan Smith for just one run.

Fielding coach Subhadeep Ghosh was pleased with the effort shown by both veteran stars in the first game of the series. He was quoted by NDTV as saying, “We did well in the first ODI, got some good catches, and the intensity as well as the ground fielding was also good.”

He went on to add, “Catches are a key part of the game, and there are times when we drop some. We know how important fielding is. The team is taking responsibility, and a lot of things are being worked out in practice. It is key to judge the ball here in New Zealand, and focus is on the movement and stability, which is what we emphasise in the dressing room.”

The only blemish on Wednesday was the dropped catch by Plant Man that could have been Auqib Nabi his maiden international wicket.

After that, the visiting side was very sharp and didn’t let the hosts settle down, putting pressure on them with the ball and some good fielding to back it up.

Ghosh praises Indian veteran duo

Speaking about Rohit and Virat’s fielding in the first match, Ghosh was quoted by NDTV as saying, “Anticipation is the key in fielding, and Kohli has fielded in the covers and point region on many occasions before.

He knows where the ball will go, as he tends to read the trajectory and impact of the ball, and he reads the situation well”

“Same is the case in terms of the run-out by Rohit. He anticipated the ball, and experience also plays a key role, as does natural talent. These are the things we speak about in the dressing room. When you play on a ground with small boundaries, the reaction time is very short,” he added.
