Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have made an important move in the transfer market ahead of the IPL 2027 season, completing a four-player trade with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on November 5. However, the deal has attracted criticism from former India captain Kris Srikanthwho believes Hyderabad have benefited more from the arrangement. While Chennai have strengthened their batting options by bringing in Liam LivingstoneSrikkanth has questioned the decision to acquire Australian pacer Jack Edwards and expressed doubts about how the new arrivals will fit into the team’s playing XI.

Under the agreement, Livingstone and Edwards moved from SRH to CSK, while Indian left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed and Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis joined the Hyderabad-based franchise.

Kris Srikkanth questions CSK’s decision to acquire Jack Edwards

Srikkanth’s biggest concern with the trade revolves around Edwards, whose international career is still in its early stages.

The Australian right-arm pacer made his international debut in January 2026 and attracted attention after producing a five-wicket haul in the second ODI against South Africa in Johannesburg.

However, his recent injury history has raised questions about his availability and consistency. Edwards was ruled out of IPL 2026 with a foot injury before getting an opportunity to represent SRH. He subsequently missed the domestic One-Day Cup final because of another injury. Considering these circumstances, Srikkanth struggled to understand why Chennai decided to bring him into their squad.

The former India opener was particularly unconvinced by the value Edwards could provide to Chennai, especially when the franchise had other areas to address before the upcoming season.

“Why Jack Edwards? He is an ordinary bowler. I am okay with CSK giving away Khaleel Ahmed as he’s nothing great. This trade is a better one for SRH,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

Livingstone’s arrival raises questions about CSK’s batting combination

Although Srikkanth criticised the overall trade, he acknowledged that Livingstone could prove to be a valuable acquisition if Chennai manage to utilise his abilities effectively.

The England all-rounder is recognised for his aggressive approach and ability to hit boundaries against different types of bowling. His presence could offer CSK another power-hitting option in the middle order, particularly with questions surrounding MS Dhoni’s availability for IPL 2027.

Livingstone joined Chennai at a reduced valuation of INR 6 crore, considerably lower than the INR 13 crore at which Hyderabad had originally acquired him. However, Srikkanth believes the bigger challenge will be finding the right position for the Englishman in the CSK batting order.

“Personally, I think Livingstone is a good cricketer if utilised well. But how he fits in with CSK is a big question mark,” he added.

Srikkanth suggests Matt Short’s release

The former India captain also brought Matt Short into the discussion while assessing how Chennai could accommodate Livingstone in their squad. He suggested that CSK should consider releasing the Australian batter and explore whether Livingstone could provide an upgrade in that role.

“CSK should release Matt Short, who is a waste, and see if Livingstone can be an upgrade for him,” Srikkanth stated.

The financial structure of the trade saw Edwards join Chennai on his existing INR 3 crore contract, while Khaleel and Ellis moved to SRH at INR 4.8 crore and INR 2 crore, respectively.
