With the IPL 2027 mini-auction now in full swing, the Kolkata Knight Riders are at a critical juncture.
In order to create a level-headed 25-member squad within their salary purse of 120 crore rupees, the Knight Riders will have to make some difficult decisions. With many high-profile signings in previous auctions, they may decide to let go of some key players to help create balance within their squad, and give some much-needed funds to the team.
1. Cameron Green (₹25.20 Crore)
Context:
Cameron Green was one of the main stars picked up at last year's auction, where he was snapped up for 25.20 crore. He had a decent season in IPL 2026, scoring 322 runs and taking 7 wickets in 14 games.
Catch:
Whilst he was a useful player, having over a fifth of the salary capped tied up in one player limits KKR's overall squad.
Strategy:
Release and Re-buy. KKR can release the Australian all-rounder so they can re-sign him for cheaper (Ideally between 14-16 crore). Whilst this gives them more room to breathe financially, there is a risk that another franchise will bid higher for him.
2. Matheesha Pathirana (₹18.00 Crore)
Context:
Signed for 18 crore in hopes that he would lead the death attack with his unique sling action. Unfortunately, he struggled with injuries during IPL 2026, suffering from a serious hamstring strain. He played only one game and bowled a total of 1.2 overs.
Catch:
As he is a high-priced overseas player, he must be available. Having an 18 crore price tag on a player who has injury concerns puts the team in a risky position.
Strategy:
Get a Consistent Overseas Pace Attack. By cutting ties, KKR have a large amount of money to play with and has an overseas spot open. They can sign a better international pace bowler.
3. Rahul Tripathi (₹75 Lakh)
Context:
Tripathi was signed for ₹75 lakh at the mini-auction of IPL 2026. However, he didn't play a single game during 2026.
Catch:
Whilst it does not affect the salary cap much, not playing players limits your squad to bringing in fresh faces.
Strategy:
Create Space For Domestic Youngsters. With Angkrish Raghuvanshi having an amazing season (He hit 422 runs in IPL 2026), KKR are looking for different domestic batsmen. Releasing Tripathi creates more space in the squad to bring in a specialist Indian finisher or an aggressive opener.
