New Zealand have suffered a major blow ahead of their five-match ODI series against India as key batsmen Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra have been ruled out due to injury. The series starts in Auckland on November 4, 2026, and NZ will need to make some significant changes to their batting line-up.

Chapman has been ruled out for the entirety of the series after confirming a left hamstring injury via an MRI scan. This comes after the batsman suffered an injury in the European T20 Premier League. Meanwhile, Ravindra has also failed to fully recover from a right shoulder dislocation that he suffered during the T20I series against India. This has caused New Zealand selectors to make several changes to their squads. Tim Seifert, Henry Nicholls, Dean Foxcroft and Matt Fisher have all been brought into the squads.

Mark Chapman, Rachin Ravindra ruled out of India ODI series

Chapman has confirmed his injury after having an MRI scan following his time playing in the European T20 Premier League. Medical reports show that Chapman will need at least two weeks of rehab before returning to full fitness, which means he will miss all 5 ODIs against India.

Ravindra is another big loss for the Kiwis. The all-rounder suffered a dislocated right shoulder during a promo shoot, meaning he has not been available for the 5-match T20I series. Whilst he has been having some rehab, he has not recovered enough to play comfortably in the field.

The Test series is going to be played in 2 matches later this November, so the management have decided against any risks to Ravindra's recovery. Instead, the selectors have looked to bolster their squad.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert has been named in the squad for the whole series after being named as the 4th and 5th ODI player. Henry Nicholls has been named in the squad for the first 3 matches. Dean Foxcroft will also be coming into the squad for the final 2 matches.

Fast Bowler Matt Fisher has been named in the squad for all 3 of the first matches after being named in the squad for the final 2.

New Zealand have lost the last T20I series against India and will be looking to make amendments in the 50-over format. However, they are lacking 2 key players due to the injuries to Chapman and Ravindra.

New Zealand Coach Rob Walter talks about the injuries

Rob Walter admitted he was disappointed about the 2 injuries but has said why neither have been rushed back.

“I had a chat with Mark last week and whilst he's disappointed he is putting the work in to get back out there. For Rachin, his shoulder hasn't quite healed back to where he can field comfortably in white ball cricket so we don't really want to take any risks with the Test series later this month,” Walter said (Cricbuzz).

The coach also noted how key both players are to the side and admitted it will be missed.

“Everyone knows how much Mark and Rachin mean to this side so it's a shame they have to miss out.”

New Zealand are also keeping an eye on Matt Henry's fitness. The quick bowler missed the last 3 T20Is against India due to a grade 1 tear to his right quadriceps.
