While the Indian selectors have kept the team very stable for the 2026-27 ODI season, there is some interesting talk about depth in the squad. While it does provide stability, there can be a gap for some exciting players.
Despite the strong performances of three players in the current T20I series against New Zealand, captained by Shreyas Iyer, none of them has been included in the initial squad for the first three ODIs of the series. Despite being excellent in the List A format and playing match-winning performances internationally, they were left out.

1.Mayank Yadav
One thing that can change the game of an ODI is true pace. With players like Mayank Yadav, who can hit speeds of over 155 km/h, India has an enforcer who can deliver.
In the List A arena, he has proven to be a very disciplined player.
List A stats: 34 wickets in 17 games at a very impressive 5.35 Economy Rate.
He was very impressive in the 4th T20I in Auckland, taking 3/48 in his 4 overs despite New Zealand hitting a blistering 259/7.
He hits well in the middle overs and keeps the run rate low, making him a great player to bring into the 50-over game with an aggressive role.
2. Abhishek Sharma
A modern player who plays with intensity and aggression. Abhishek Sharma has scored 2196 runs in 69 games in List A game. He is a very experienced 50-over player.
He also has useful left-arm orthodox spin, meaning he can be used as an extra bowler.
Abhishek started the T20I series against New Zealand very impressively, scoring the most runs for India in the first 3 games with 196 runs at an average of 49.
He was awarded Player of the Match in the 3rd T20I in Wellington, scoring well to help India win comfortably by 6 wickets.
Despite having veteran players like Rohit Sharma in the top order and promising players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek has such a game-winning impact it is hard to leave him out.
3. Tilak Varma
Tilak Varma offers a classic 50-over player style. He plays under pressure, rotates strike extremely well against spin and plays with discipline.
He has been very consistent in the List A game, scoring 2142 runs in 52 games at an average of 47.60.
With Tilak having played in the ODI game in 5 games, there have never been any questions about his leadership skills and temperament. He has been noted for his steady progression and was brought back into the team for the 4th and 5th ODIs of the New Zealand tour. This shows that while Tilak has not come through quickly, he will soon make an impact in the 50-over game.
As the 2026-27 international schedule rolls around it may be beneficial to bring in these 3 different styles to add some extra edge to the ODI side. The talent is there and it will be interesting to see how quickly the Indian selectors decide to use them.
