Former India captain Rohit Sharma will play for Mumbai in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy starting December 14, according to a report in The Indian Express. The right-handed batter has informed the Mumbai Cricket Association of his availability. Rohit will join the squad after the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka at home, scheduled from December 13 to 19. The fixtures will be held in Delhi, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.
Rohit is likely to play in Mumbai’s fourth match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign against Saurashtra on December 21.
“He has informed us that he will be playing for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and to consider him available after India’s three-ODI series against Sri Lanka at home,” an MCA source said while speaking to The Indian Express.
“How many matches he (Rohit) will be available for, he will inform us later,” the source added.
The league stage of India’s premier domestic ODI tournament will be played from December 14 to 29, followed by the knockout matches from January 2 to 8. India will also host Sri Lanka for three T20Is from December 22, during which Rohit will compete for Mumbai in domestic cricket.
Rohit will have 10 days to turn out for Mumbai in the league stage before he takes the field for the Men in Blue in the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe, starting January 3. The third and final ODI against Zimbabwe will be played at the Wankhede Stadium on January 9.
Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Ranchi and Rajkot will host the league-stage matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy while the knockouts will be played in Visakhapatnam.
Rohit played two Vijay Hazare Trophy matches for Mumbai last season, marking his first appearance in the competition since 2018.
While Rohit is turning to domestic cricket once again, it needs to be seen if Virat Kohli also makes himself available for the tournament.
