Speculation has started to run wild after reports emerged that Rohit Sharma may be reappointed as captain of the Mumbai Indians in the 2027 Indian Premier League.
Rohit has agreed to return as captain of the franchise after they approached him for the role in the 2027 season.
The move would come after a frustrating year for the franchise, having appointed him as their captain in a shock move ahead of the 2024 season. Since then it has been a difficult period for them, both in terms of team cohesion and results. They have been unable to recreate the ruthless edge that saw them become the poster boys of modern T20 cricket.
But by bringing back Rohit as captain, they will have pleased the restless fans at Wankhede Stadium. It would also bring back one of the best tacticians in white-ball history. Under the armband, he won 87 games in 158 matches (55.06% win rate). He has won five IPLs as skipper (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020).
1. Breaks the deadlock with MS Dhoni
One of the most exciting stories regarding Rohit is that he will break the deadlock in being the sole T20 skipper. Currently, Rohit and MS Dhoni have both won five IPL titles.
Dhoni has been building his legacy over 14 years with the Chennai Super Kings between 2010 and 2023 while Rohit has already built his first empire over eight years. No one else is even close to matching their total. Gautam Gambhir and Rajat Patidar have both been stuck on two titles with Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, respectively.
If Rohit can win his sixth title in 2027, he will be in a category of his own as the first-ever six-time winning captain.
2. Triple Digit Captaincy Wins
One of the most difficult achievements in the IPL is getting to triple-digit wins as a captain. Only one man has done it in the 19 years the league has been running. MS Dhoni has won 136 of 235 games.
| Captain | Matches | wins | Losses | win% |
| MS Dhoni | 235 | 136 | 97 | 58.11% |
| Rohit Sharma | 158 | 87 | 67 | 55.06% |
| Gautam Gambhir | 129 | 71 | 57 | 55.03% |
| Virat Kohli | 143 | 66 | 70 | 48.59% |
The current 87 wins that Rohit has means he only needs 13 more to achieve the century of wins. While it will be tough to achieve 13 wins in one season, requiring near-perfection in both the 14-match league phase and playoff stages, he has done so previously in 2017 and 2020 for Mumbai.
3. Entering the 4000 Run Club
Since Rohit's leadership of the team, he has always been a strong leader at the top of the batting order. With Rohit returning to the captaincy, he will have a very real chance at achieving some of the most impressive batting records.
4000 RUNS – In 158 matches, Rohit has scored 3986 runs for Mumbai as captain. He has also hit 25 half-centuries with an average of 28.07. All he needs to do is score 14 runs to become only the third captain in IPL history to pass 4000 runs. Alongside Virat Kohli (4994 runs) and MS Dhoni (4600+ runs).
175 SIXES – With Rohit hitting 155 sixes for Mumbai as captain, he can easily hit 175 sixes as captain in a full season. Currently, only Dhoni and Kohli have passed 175 sixes.
Mumbai Indians are entering a new era and the message from the front office is clear. They want to win the future by going back to their captain who led them to their golden era.
