Virat Kohli has begun intensive batting practice sessions ahead of India's next one-day international series against New Zealand. Virat Kohli was seen hitting in the nets in a video posted on social media on Sunday.
Kohli, who has retired from playing Tests and T20 internationals, only plays for India in ODIs at the moment. He will have very few chances to keep himself fit and match-sharp during the gap between assignments so it will be important for the senior batsman to keep himself in shape.
Virat Kohli's build-up has been in the spotlight with the debate around him and Rohit Sharma's future in India's 2027 ODI World Cup plans in South Africa.
But the veteran batsmen will get another chance to make an impact in the series against New Zealand.New Zealand assistant coach James Pamment recently spoke on the debate, saying those who have played for their teams for many years should be given the freedom to make their own decisions on their retirement. He worked alongside Rohit as Mumbai Indians' fielding coach for eight years.
“When they're approaching the end of their career, there's certainly that conversation.
They've earned the right to make that choice themselves,” Pamment said.“If they feel like the 2027 World Cup is something they want to achieve in their career, then they should be supported and it'll come down to how they perform.”
Pamment hasn't worked with Kohli but still praised the batter on his professionalism. “He is such a professional. Someone who wants to play cricket and is fully committed to what they're doing. I've seen him very closely, and he's the ultimate professional. I'd want to have someone like that around me all the time.”
The ODI series between India and New Zealand kicks off on November 4. This will give Kohli another chance to show he is ready for the 50-over format.
