Australia has been given a huge boost as the three-match Test series is level at 1-1, with star all-rounder Cameron Green stating his fitness for the third and final Test against South Africa starting October 27.
Green will add much-needed strength to the Australian batting line-up with the addition of Green, but he will only play as a batter. Green was unable to bowl due to receiving medical clearance for an abdominal injury, meaning Australia would only utilize him as a batter.
The 27-year-old suffered an abdominal strain in Australia's third ODI against South Africa on September 30 in Potchefstroom, and while he looked set to miss the whole Test series, he watched as Australia took the opener and suffered a humiliating innings and a 31-run loss in the second Test.
However, Green has recovered incredibly quickly.
“I'm good to go; surprisingly, I've healed so quickly, or I've got so much function in my arm so early,” Green said in an interview with Cricinfo.
Although keen eyes noticed as he rolled his arm over in the nets, he is being played safe by the team management and medical staff. He will have no pressure of bowling.
2. The Middle Order Repair
After seeing Australia crumble in their opening innings at Gqeberha, losing their top order for a measly 99 runs, Australia have brought Green back into the side as a specialist batter.
Green offers stability and length to a team that struggled to score any runs against South Africa's pace attack. After playing all around the order in his Test career, Green said he was happy to play wherever needed.
3. Playing In His Comfortable Zone
While Green sees himself as a middle-order batter, he is willing to play anywhere depending on the selection.
Comfortable In: 4 or 5.
Flexible: Will play higher or lower depending on the team.
In Good Form: Has played well in Australia's winter Test matches in Mackay and Darwin, and has batted well in Sheffield Shield cricket.
“I've had a lot of experience batting up and down the order; I think I'm very comfortable batting in 4 or 5, but obviously some outstanding players have batted in those positions. But I'm very happy to play up and down depending on the team's needs,” Green said.
The series is currently tied 1-1. If South Africa win at Newlands, they will secure an incredible comeback win. Australia have brought Green back as a specialist batter, giving them that extra bit of power needed to make a comeback, withstand the South African onslaught and win the series.
