Mumbai Indians have roped in former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard as their head coach for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season. The 38-year-old Pollard, who was previously the batting coach of the franchise, has been elevated to the post after Mahela Jayawardene left the position.
The former West Indies star pacer has spent the majority of his playing career at Mumbai Indians as a player and now transitions to a coach. This move marks yet another chapter of a long-standing association with the franchise as Mumbai Indians announced that the elevation was a continuation of one of the longest-standing player-coaching relationships in cricket.
In its official statement, Mumbai Indians spoke of Kieron Pollard's profound understanding of the franchise's ethos, philosophy of the game and the challenges of playing at the top level. The management also spoke about the player's experience of being a part of the history of T20 cricket and his understanding of the evolving dynamics and intricacies of the modern-day game.
Having been a part of the Mumbai Indians family as a player before transitioning into a coach, Kieron Pollard would be familiar with the inner workings and requirements of the franchise. Furthermore, his experience as a batting coach would give him an upper hand while preparing the side for the 2027 season.
“Pollard brings an exceptional understanding of Mumbai Indians, its culture and the demands of competing at the highest level. Having been part of T20 cricket's evolution, he brings valuable insight into the game's changing dynamics, tactical demands and increasingly competitive landscape,” the franchise stated in its official statement.
MI added that Pollard knew the franchise from within, having been a part of it in his playing and, more recently, coaching days, which would give him an insight into steering the side towards future triumphs.
Pollard spoke of his gratitude on becoming the head coach of MI, calling the opportunity an honor and the trust placed in him by the Mumbai Indians' co-owners Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani as 'priceless'. The former West Indies cricketer also spoke of his emotional bond with the franchise, the players and the fans, the Paltan.
“The journey as Mumbai Indians continues and I look forward to working closely with the squad and support staff to build upon MI's legacy while nurturing emerging talent,” he said. “It is an honor to take on the role of Head Coach of Mumbai Indians. MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan means a great deal to me.”
Having had a front-row seat to the glorious chapter of MI's history as a player and a coach before, Pollard knows what it takes to don the Blue and Gold jersey and the expectations that come with it. He also spoke of his desire to make the fans happy by giving them more reasons to cheer in the coming seasons.
“I am grateful to Mrs. Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and the entire MI family for their trust in me. I hope to make a meaningful contribution to the club's continued growth and provide more moments for the fans to cheer in the seasons ahead,” Kieron Pollard added.
Mumbai Indians co-owner Nita Ambani was thrilled to announce Kieron Pollard's appointment as the head coach of her beloved franchise. She recalled the journey that the former West Indies all-rounder had undertaken since he joined MI as a 22-year-old and spoke of his contribution to the team as a player and a coach. Pollard has been an important part of Mumbai Indians' MI family for the last 16 years since he joined the outfit as a young and energetic 22-year-old.
“He is someone whose commitment, passion, and understanding of the game have positively impacted the Mumbai Indians family. Kieron Pollard joined Mumbai Indians as a young 22-year-old and, over the past sixteen years, has become an integral part of our family. As a player, he gave us many unforgettable moments, and as a coach, he has continued to share his experience, passion and deep understanding of the game,” Ambani said.
“We are delighted to see him take on this new responsibility as Head Coach. Polly knows what it means to wear the MI jersey and what it takes to play for the Paltan. I am confident that he will bring the same commitment, belief and determination to this role,” added Ambani.
Kieron Pollard's promotion has come at an opportune time for Mumbai Indians as the franchise gears up for the IPL 2027 season. They have turned to one of their own to lead the charge in their quest for a record sixth IPL title.
Kieron Pollard has been a part of the Mumbai Indians family in the past and has seen the highs and the lows of the franchise. As a player, he led his side to the 2013 and 2015 titles before moving to the role of batting coach. Now, he has the baton passed to him as he is entrusted with the role of head coach.
The challenge for Pollard would be to translate his knowledge of the franchise into tangible results on the field in one of the most competitive leagues in the world. Having already been a part of the setup before, he is expected to take his time on the job seriously and get the best out of the squad.
Mumbai Indians, with five IPL titles to its name, would look to Pollard to guide the outfit to more victories in the years to come. His tactical nous and understanding of the game would be vital for the franchise as it bids to emerge as one of the most successful sides in the history of cricket.
