England's Women's Team captain Nat Sciver-Brunt is in a dilemma about whether she will be available for the T20I series against Sri Lanka, as the fixtures clash with the final stages of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2027. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has indicated that they will allow players to fulfill their WPL commitments.
England are set to tour Sri Lanka for a T20I and ODI series in February next year ahead of the Champions Trophy. The T20I leg, however, clashes with the closing stages of the WPL, which could leave several players in a dilemma. Sciver-Brunt, who has been retained by Mumbai Indians for the upcoming season, is one of the players who could be in a dilemma.
Nat Sciver-Brunt is one of the highest-paid players in The Women's Premier League (WPL), she is reportedly being paid around £320,000 for the tournament. She is also one of only two English players retained by their franchises for the 2027 season, the other being Sophie Ecclestone, who will be representing UP Warriorz. The auction list released this week features only two other English players, Sophia Dunkley and Kira Chathli.
If she misses the Sri Lanka T20Is, it will only add to the growing list of things recently missed by Sciver-Brunt in England's shortest format. If she misses the series, she will have captained England in only four of the 14 T20Is that the team has played over the preceding 12 months, she missed the T20I series against New Zealand and India this summer due to a calf injury, which also limited her to four appearances during the T20 World Cup.
Speaking on the Wisden Women's Weekly podcast, former England batsman Lauren Winfield-Hill urged Sciver-Brunt to prioritize international cricket if she wants to continue captaining England.
“She absolutely should be there, in my opinion. If she wants to continue captaining England, it's not a good look”
She added that a player's commitment to England must be reflected in their decisions, acknowledging the significant financial difference between franchise and international cricket.
“You can't talk about playing for England meaning the world for you unless you back that up with your actions. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out; money always talks. The amount of money that she's on vs what she would be earning for England would be significant, but I just think if you want to continue as England captain you should be playing for England”
The Sri Lanka series was initially scheduled to take place after the WPL concluded. However, following the Champions Trophy's move to the February window, the ECB and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) agreed to bring the series forward to make sure it could be completed before the tournament.
Winfield-Hill also pointed to England men's captain Harry Brook's decision to pull out of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) to prioritize his international commitments; he then received a two-year ban from entries to the IPL auction.
Although acknowledging the differences between the men's and women's games, Winfield-Hill said Brook's decision demonstrated the importance of putting international cricket first.
“I hate to draw parallels to the men's game but you've got to have huge respect for Harry Brook and the decision that he made on the IPL, and that was before he was England captain, 'that is a shit load of money, but I care about playing for England'”
The WPL 2027 auction is scheduled to take place in Kochi on October 28. England's T20I series against Sri Lanka is due to begin on February 1, leaving Sciver-Brunt with a significant decision to make as she balances her franchise commitments with her responsibilities as national captain.
